Georgia Oboh

Georgia Oboh was expected to be among the young golfers at the female version of the World Amateur Championship in Dublin, Ireland, but her partner, Anita Uwadiae’s inability to make the event led to her absence at the championship. A country must have at least two players to feature at the championship.

That disappointment notwithstanding, Oboh is unrelenting in her quest to become one of the best women golfers in the world. Her only worry is that her finances are drying up and she needs sponsors to come to her aid.

The 2015 World Teen champion is currently preparing for the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina, which is among the competitions Oboh feels would aid her in achieving her aim of being Nigeria’s first participant in the golf event of the Olympic Games, with Tokyo 2020 her target.

She made her first cut in a professional event in the Florida Women’s Open at the Quail Creek Country Club in Naples on August, where she finished 32nd in a total field of 120 top amateurs and lady professionals in the tournament.

Being the last tournament in a series of events that she has played in preparation for the Youth Olympics next month, the teenager is still seeking a long-term commitment from potential sponsors to help with her training costs.

2018 has been a very good year for Oboh, who featured in five professional events, including the LPGA Nigeria, where she came second, the LET Access series in France and Switzerland, as well as the 2018 Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco.

She has been invited to the Junior Symetra Tour qualifying tournament at the exclusive private club at Alaqua Country Club in Longwood Florida, United States.

If she scaled the hurdles, Oboh would become the first Nigerian to play on the LPGA feeder tour- the Symetra Tour.

Speaking on the competition after a couple of practice rounds, Oboh describes the course as “very challenging as it has rained a lot in the last week and so the fairways are soft and the course is therefore playing very long indeed.

“I have been purposefully practicing my drives and my short game and I am gratefully anticipating a great weekend.”

Oboh is one of the two young golfers that will represent Nigeria at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina from October 9 to 16. The other is Jordan Thompson, who is currently playing at the Amateur World Championships in Ireland.
