Oke-Ogun Polytechnic suspends ASUP, threatens workers with sack

The governing council of Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki, Oyo State, on Thursday, called on the academic staff of the institution to resume work immediately or lose their jobs.

The union, our correspondent gathered, had joined their counterparts in other state-owned tertiary institutions to embark on an industrial action over issues bothering on salaries and other entitlements.

But the council, in a communique issued and made available to journalists in Ibadan, the state capital, announced immediate suspension of the activities of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP).

The council, in the communique jointly signed by Prof. Moshood Tijani, Mr. A.O Ojewole and Mr. Musbau Ayinla, Chairman, Secretary and Registrar and Chairman, Council Negotiation Committee respectively, directed the academic staff of the institution to resume work immediately, stressing that recalcitrant workers were at risk of losing their jobs.

The trio, in the communique issued after an emergency meeting of the council held at the conference room of the State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in Ibadan on Thursday, added that the council had empowered the management of the institution to maintain peace and tranquility within the institution.

It called on the management to open a central register for academic staff to sign as from Monday, Sept. 10, saying the register should close by 4 p.m.

The council said, “We empower the management to maintain peace, law and order.

“We also stand on our earlier Memorandum of Understanding with the unions which took effect with payment of July 2016 net arrears.”
